Room for rent in Upper West Side - Manhattan, New York

Petra V - $800/month

About Me

Dear potential roommate,

We are a European family who moved to NYC 25 years ago. Two of our sons are college age (and beyond) and our youngest just turned four. We live in a beautiful spacious three bedroom pre-war apartment on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. We work in law and psychology, are bookish and creative, speak German and English at home and spend our summers in Europe.

We have a free bedroom with two large windows, open city views, high ceiling, a twin bed that folds out to queen size, small built-in closet and a private ensuite bathroom.

We are looking for someone who loves kids and can help out with occasional babysitting.

Our ideal roommate is

- female
- loves children
- is kind, and has a “cheery disposition”
- enjoys engaging a pre-schooler with enthusiasm and wit
- has lots of real life experience with kids (either through extensive babysitting jobs, younger siblings or her own grown kids)
- has an outside job or is enrolled in a graduate program in NYC
- is easy to get along, but also enjoys her private space
- likes healthy food and cooking

You might ask yourself why don’t they look for a full time nanny?

The short answer is, we only need very few hours of help with childcare, often just one hour per weekday. Full time nannies want to live out and look for 40+ hours per week positions.
In addition, the hours of the day we do need help with, are either early in the day like 8-9 am or late for evening babysitting (where mostly it’s putting the child to bed and then being free but staying around). Therefore it is ideal to have someone who is both close by as well as having an independent life through work or studies.

Our youngest son is in preschool from 9 am to 3 pm and gets picked up by one of us parents daily. But we both have jobs that start early in the day and need to leave the house at or before 8 am. Therefore we need help with drop-off to preschool (which starts at 9 am) in the mornings. Occasional evening babysitting is great but can be organized in advance when it works for everyone’s schedule.

Our potential roommate is therefore free every weekday at 9 am to pursue their own studies and/or work. Weekends are off completely.

Naturally, the rent is adjusted so that the babysitting hours (5-10 per week approximately) are factored in and lower the rent amount. In an ideal match of people’s lifestyles and personalities this can be a win-win for everyone.

We look forward to meeting interested people by arranging video calls to get to know each other better, so we can ensure we’re a good match!
